From the acclaimed author of Forever, Interrupted and After I Do comes a breathtaking new novel about a young woman whose fate hinges on the choice she makes after bumping into an old flame; in alternating chapters, we see two possible scenarios unfold—with stunningly different results.
At the age of twenty-nine, Hannah Martin still has no idea what she wants to do with her life. She has lived in six different cities and held countless meaningless jobs since graduating college. On the heels of leaving yet another city, Hannah moves back to her hometown of Los Angeles and takes up residence in her best friend Gabby’s guestroom. Shortly after getting back to town, Hannah goes out to a bar one night with Gabby and meets up with her high school boyfriend, Ethan.
Just after midnight, Gabby asks Hannah if she’s ready to go. A moment later, Ethan offers to give her a ride later if she wants to stay. Hannah hesitates. What happens if she leaves with Gabby? What happens if she leaves with Ethan?
In concurrent storylines, Hannah lives out the effects of each decision. Quickly, these parallel universes develop into radically different stories with large-scale consequences for Hannah, as well as the people around her. As the two alternate realities run their course, Maybe in Another Life raises questions about fate and true love: Is anything meant to be? How much in our life is determined by chance? And perhaps, most compellingly: Is there such a thing as a soul mate?
Hannah believes there is. And, in both worlds, she believes she’s found him.
“Doesn’t it scare you?” I ask her. “To think that you might have gone in the wrong direction? And missed the life you were destined for?”
Do you ever wonder how different your life would be, if you would’ve made a different choice, whether that be a big choice or even simple one. That is what Maybe in Another Life is about. How Hannah’s life is drastically changed in one night. The book has 2 stories, like Hannah in one life, and Hannah in her other life, when she chose to go in the opposite direction. I know there are times I sit and wonder what my life would be like, if I went to college or never moved from my fathers house. This is a instant connection for us, as readers, we all what-ifs!
I think everyone should read this book because #1 TJR is the bees knees! She is like my best friend in my head. I might have a slight girl crush on her, and her brain! #2 Her books are ALWAYS like a breath of fresh air. #3 The emotions she makes us feel in her stories, are real emotions albeit some of the hurt like hell, they still make you feel it to the core.
Maybe in Another Life is chick lit, there is romance, but its not the main focus. I connect with TJR’s books so well, because she writes about her main characters and their dynamics with their family, friends and other people in general. One of my favorite connections is between Hannah and her best friend Gabby. I have a best friend who I’d do anything for and these two made me fall in love with them <3
“And I think to myself that if, by being here, I have taken away one one-hundreth of the pain that Gabby feels, then maybe I have more of a life’s purpose than I ever thought.
“Divide the pain in two,” I tell her,”And give half of it to me.”
TJR is an automatic read for me! My friends and I were having a convo about her, and one of them brought up that we cant wait until she has kids and maybe…hopefully writes a book about motherhood and all the craziness that it is! Lol!
I really liked this book, it’s not my favorite of hers, but its still a great read and worth every penny! (After I Do is my fav of hers and if you haven’t read it, you totally should!)
