From the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Driven series.
One Night. That's all it was supposed to be.
Reeling from the sudden loss of her sister, Haddie Montgomery has sworn off relationships. All she wanted from Beckett Daniels was a sexy distraction to help her escape her pain for just a little while....There weren’t supposed to be any strings attached—so why can’t she shake the memory of that unforgettable night from her thoughts? Or the taste of his kiss from her lips?
No matter how hard Haddie tries to forget about him, Becks relentlessly tries to prove that she should start living for today. But she is determined to avoid romantic commitment, and she can always use her ex-boyfriend’s reappearance to help snuff out the slow burn within her that Becks has sparked....
Or will fate force her to realize that this kind of connection doesn’t come along very often and a chance at love is worth the risk?
He chuckles low and even, a sarcastic amusement woven through the sound that pisses me off. “What are you afraid of? Why is his offer so much more tempting than mine, huh? Oh, I know why,” he says, sarcasm dripping from his words. “He’ll walk away without any questions. But I won’t will I, Haddie? I have plenty of questions. The first one being what exactly are you running from?”
My eyes flash up to meet his, and the look – the moment that passes between us – is too honest, too raw. I have to break it. I can’t let him see the truths that even I’m trying to hide from. How I feel and what I need to fix me – the answer being him – because I’m not going to allow it to happen.
I can feel it. I can know it. But he can’t.
My mind flashes back momentarily to the night of the wedding. Of how I asked him – gave him no other option really –to take me to bed. Did I know then that unzipping my dress for him and inviting him between my legs would lead to this? Me wanting so much more? Me standing in the middle of his apartment wanting to ask for more but unable to because of the fears that are holding me hostage?
“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone, Had. I know you’re scared, but push through it. You just might miss the opportunity to live again.”
Slow Burn is a story about Haddie (Rylee’s best friend) and Becks (Colton’s best friend). This book picks up at Rylee and Colton’s wedding night. Haddie has had a an emotionally crippling thing happen to her. Her sister passed away from breast cancer, not only that her mother has been fighting the disease for many years too. This life changing event has totally changed the fun loving character we met in the first 3 books.
Haddie and Becks have known each other since they met in vegas, but once Haddie’s heart break and alcohol mix she wants to forget it all and she does that in seducing Becks. This leads to a electrifying chemistry between the two. What starts off as sex with no strings, quickly turns into raw feelings and emotions being brought back to the surface for Haddie. She tries her best to push them all away, but Becks is wonderful and patient even as frustrating as Haddie can be.
“I want you to make me feel owned”
The cancer part of this story was very well told. I personally have a family member fighting the disease and K. Bromberg shined a VERY realistic light on it. It’s a constant battle of up and downs and she got into the thoughts and fears of what it might be to face the fact that of having cancer.
“Haddie, you cant close yourself off forever. A life without passion and love is like slowly freezing to death.”
While I enjoy the writing from K. Bromberg. I didn’t totally fall in love with this story. While it was sexy and had some deeply emotional moments, some of it was very predictable and felt like I have read this book many times. It could be me and that I need to just take a break from New Adult genre.
I say if you are a fan of the Driven series or a fan of Erotic emotionally deep romance then read this book. I have a feeling all the Driven fans will LOVE this and Becks is damn sexy, he may have been the good guy in the past books, but in Slow Burn we get to see his edgier side and its pretty HOT!
I liked this book, didn’t love it, but I liked it. If you are in the mood for boatloads of steaminess then you are going to like Slow Burn too because the sex was endless. Drunk sex, wedding sex, outdoor sex, kitchen sex, lounge sex, wall sex…and on and on. Do you get the picture? 😉
“I plan on making you weak, making you hoarse, leaving you breathless. Baby, I can dominate with the best of them. The question here is, how bad do you want it?”
There is also quite a bit of emotional feels too. Haddie has gone through an extremely hard year. She is shouldering a lot on her own and trying to work through her pain alone. Becks is super swoony in this book, and he’s tries breaking down Haddie’s walls. But she is tough and strong willed, so she doesn’t make it easy for him. There was some parts of this book I actually cried because it was so heartbreaking. Becks also melts hearts with the caring he shows Haddie.
“I don’t care how hard you push me, Montgomery. I’m not going anywhere.”
What I didn’t like about Slow Burn was the forced angst with Haddie’s ex-boyfriend, Dante. I did not understand his purpose other than to add extra drama. It seemed unnecessary and deterred from the heart of the story.
Even though Slow Burn is part of the Driven world it can be read as stand-alone. If you are already a Driven fan then you’re going to like Haddie and Becks’ romance. The author even gives us a few scenes with Colton that should please many fans.
