For the Love of Audio Books!

I have recently discovered a new love in my reading career and it’s AUDIO BOOKS! If you read as much as me then you know it takes up A LOT of time, and sometimes housework and daily chores suffer as a result. Years ago I did the 30-day Audible FREE trial and listened to The Help. The experience was truly magical in the way the narrators brought the story to life. However, Audible was too expensive for my meager budget, so sadly, I canceled my Audible account after the 30 days.

A few months ago my local librarian told me about the Overdrive app. Overdrive is an app that links to your local public library, and it gives you access to 1000’s of FREE ebooks and audiobooks. So needless to say, Overdrive changed my life because I am now able to read/listen to books I would have never been able to afford.

Listening to a narrator read you a story is such a different experience than reading it yourself, and it’s fun to switch it up sometimes. 🙂 I listen while while exercising, cleaning, driving in the car alone, and even as I grocery shop. So, what books have I enjoyed listening to lately? Well, here are a few:

LICK (Stage Dive #1) by Kylie Scott. The girls here @ Lit Slave love this series and were on my case to read it so… I loved it. It was hot and sweet and funny!

The second book in the Stage Dive series is PLAY (Mal’s story) which I read it as an ebook. The third book LEAD (Jimmy’s story) I listened to, and it was my absolute favorite out of the series so far.

My very first book of 2015 was Lady Luck by Kristen Ashley. Not only did the writing blow me away, but I also found a new book husband, Ty Walker. I could go on and on and on about my depths of affection for that man. I highly encourage my fellow romance lovers to pick up this book no matter the format (ebook, paperback, or audio). I will say I wasn’t crazy about the narrator in the beginning. However, she did grow on me after a while, so all was good.

After Lady Luck I jumped right into Breathe by Kristen Ashley. I really liked it, but didn’t love it as much as Lady Luck. It’s really hard to top Ty Walker in Lady Luck IMO. Breathe was still a solid 4-4.5 star read for me.

This past week I listened to Until Fountain Bridge by Samantha Young, and I have to say this is my favorite narrator to date. Her voice was soothing, her Scottish accent was awesome, and she captured the spirit of the character perfectly! UFB is a short On Dublin Street novella about Ellie and Adam.

Whispersync is a great way to buy Audible books affordably. The way it works is that you first buy the Kindle book, and then you can purchase the Whispersync enabled audio version (sometimes at a low price). Whispersync is also an excellent way to listen to indie author audios since typically, those aren’t offered through the library/Overdrive. I like to look for deals and steals. I’ll give you a few of examples:

I bought Captured in the Dark by C.J. Roberts Kindle book on sale for $0.99, since I owned the ebook I was able to buy the audio version for only $1.99. I also did the same with Outlander. I bought the ebook on sale for $1.99, then I was able to purchase the audio version at a reduced priced of $3.99. Recently I purchased Lost to You (The Regret series #1) by A.L. Jackson ebook as a freebie, and then I was able to buy the Audible version for only $1.99!

So, what’s next on my audiobook TBR?

I’m on the Overdrive wait list for this two books, and I can’t wait!

We’d love to hear your thoughts on audiobooks!

P.S. Don’t forget to leave a thoughtful review on Goodreads and Amazon or other retailer. 🙂

  1. Great post, Beth! One of my goals this year is to get better at listening to audio books. What I mean by that is that I will often listen to them when I’m doing work on my computer and then I tend to get too focused and zone out on the book. I know that I just need to learn to balance the two. I could get so many more books read this way! I have so many audiobooks I haven’t read/listened to!

Megan, I can’t listen while working on the computer either. It has to be a mindless task (for me at least)…lol.
