Deacon has an ugly history, a history that broke him, leaving him a ghost of a man. Out of necessity, he left the normal world to descend into the criminal world and found he fit. So he stayed. Cold as ice and living off the grid, Deacon has no intention to connect, not with anyone.

Then he returns to some remote cabins in the Colorado Mountains and finds they have new owners. One of them is Cassidy Swallow, a young woman willing to work hard to live her quiet dream in a house by a river surrounded by aspen and pine.

Suddenly, Deacon finds he’s at war. Cassidy’s pull for him to connect is strong. He fights it, but he loses, always coming back for more. But when he does, he gives her nothing.

From the first time she sees him, Cassidy knows Deacon is dead inside. She knows he’s the kind of man who could destroy a woman. But one night when Deacon’s control slips, Cassidy takes a chance.

He might break her. He also might be her dream come true.

Any fan of KA’s Unfinished Hero Series will enjoy this book. This series is a bit darker, a bit grittier, and lot kinkier. KA takes it to a whole new level with Deacon.

Cassidy has become the new owner of a remote set of cabins in the Colorado Mountains, a dream of hers since she was a child. They need a lot of work, work she’s willing to put in but she needs help, money, and lots of time. She also wants to do that work side by side with someone who loves her and wants to help live her dream.

In the beginning she has some hardships finding help and maneuvering with the obstacles that come with owning run down cabins. She’s feisty, strong, funny, ambitious and I really loved her. She has a sense of innocence to her that I enjoyed but she is no withering wall flower. She’s willing to put in the hard work and time it takes to make her dream come true and she sacrifices a lot to make that happen.

“We had a badass/ornery chick understanding.”

Within the first few weeks of owning the cabin a mysterious stranger comes to stay. He’s apparently stayed there before because asks for the most remote cabin on the property, cabin eleven.

“You got a unit open?”… “Unit eleven”

Deacon is handsome, quiet, terrifying, and a complete mystery. He shows up saying his name is John Priest, only to stay for a couple of days then vanishing for months on end. He becomes a ghost but one Cassidy can’t get out of her mind. Every time he returns, it sparks a feeling in her she can’t leave alone and has her wanting to get to know him better. But who is he? What does he do? Where does he go for months on end? Why is he so cold when she can feel and see interest in his eyes? Every time Cassidy tries to show him her kindness and friendship he shoots her down. He visits and rents a cabin then leaves for months only to return with the same cold indifference he always carries. But why return?

“Woman,” he growled impatience threaded liberally through the word. “Go…the fuck…home.” And it was then he closed the door on me.

This lasts for four long years until one fateful night a shift occurs that changes their relationship. Things heat up and sparks fly! Their chemistry is off the charts and KA knows how to write a sexy alpha hero and a feisty, loveable heroine. From this connection, they discover they have particular…”tastes” in common and Deacon is able to lead Cassidy into a new world of pleasure. And boy does It. Get. Kinky.

“Most beautiful woman I’ve ever fuckin’ seen.”
Far from gentle.
Rough.
Greedy.
Demanding.
Amazing.

But Deacon has some serious ghosts and one hell of a painful past that he can’t seem to let go of. As much as he wants to give Cassidy everything she needs and love her the way she deserves, his demons keep him guarded.

“You broke me”…let me go.”

Will Cassidy ever discover the secrets of this beautiful broken man? And what happens to Deacon if she does?
“It’s a beautiful war, baby….And I…just…won.”

Deacon had the old KA feel to it. I was immediately sucked into the story. This is a story about a woman trying to be independent and run her own business, but at the same time trying to find happiness and love.  Just like the rest of the books in this series, we definitely  get the hot erotic sex. Kristen Ashley mixed with some dirty kinky sex…who doesn’t love that?

Deacon was my favorite character. He doesn’t follow anyones rules, but his own. Total alpha man with a good heart.  Cassidy is a great heroine, as all KA’ leading ladies are. She is a REAL woman! Cassidy is not afraid of baking a pie and wielding a hammer.

“Jesus, you’re so much of a woman, you’re more woman than any woman I’ve met.” I started getting peeved again. “You say that like it’s bad.” I replied sharply. “Hang on, Cassidy, Im still adjusting to your last mood swim.”

LOL^^ I loved that about her! She is a crazy woman just like the rest of us. Mood swings and all 😉

“His eyes had the power to make you feel what he was feeling. Cold to your soul. Or warm in a way you’d never again feel a chill.”

While I was wrapped up in the excitement of Cassidy and Deacon getting together, I was still in the back of my mind trying to figure Deacon out. He is a mystery and I loved how we peel back the layers to get to his core.

“Because I was dead man walking.”

There was one part that broke me, I mean I was so sad and wondering how it would all tie together. I will say there was one part in the book that got a little weird for me. It wasn’t a major thing just a bit awkward for me. That was my only issue the rest of it I loved!!

So if you are a fan of older couples finding love and hot kinky sex, then this book is for you. No added crazy angst. Just a great erotic romance story with a relatable heroine and mysterious lovable jerk!

Deacon is the fourth book in Kristen Ashley’s Unfinished Heroes series. I am a huge fan of this series. These books have most of the same elements her other books have, but with an extra edge.

In Deacon, we meet Cassidy Swallow, a patient, persistent and hard working woman, whom I found to be so intriguing and endearing. I love and relate to so many of Ms. Ashley’s heroines, and Cassidy was no exception.

From an early age, Cassidy knew she wanted to one day renovate and run her own group of cabins to rent in the gorgeous Colorado mountains, and soon after we meet her, her dream becomes a reality. Unfortunately, her live in boyfriend, the man she thought she would marry and run the business with, isn’t the man she thought he was. After they make the move together from Oklahoma to Colorado, Cassidy quickly learns that he is lazy, selfish, and wants nothing to do with the cottages, other than to be a financial burden. Although she is heartbroken, this determined woman doesn’t let this roadblock stop her from keeping on with her journey.

Soon, the first customer of Glacier Lilly Cottages returns, and is none other than John Priest, a dark, handsome and hulking man with a tortured soul. John seemed to be the ghost of a man, going through life without actually living.

“There was nothing there. He was standing. His blood was coursing through his veins. He was breathing. But that was it. He existed. He did not live.”

Despite the nearly impenetrable walls John surrounds himself with, Cassidy still finds herself inexplicably drawn to him. Although he vanishes for months at a time, she can’t keep him off her mind.

“His eyes had the power to make you feel what he was feeling. Cold to your soul. Or warm in a way you’d never again feel a chill.”

Although Cassidy had her heart broken, she was still willing to risk her heart. I loved her willingness to again take such a huge risk on love, especially a risk that didn’t seem likely to end in her favor. The pull John had on her was just too strong for her to ignore.

The night Cassidy learns John Priest is really Deacon Gates, everything changes. Deacon still has his walls up, but our strong heroine is determined to make him learn to trust and love again.

“I knew down to my bones I couldn’t bear a life of longing for him, wondering how it could have been if he gave me what he was offering me right now at that moment. The chance to get in.”

The journey Deacon and Cassidy take us on is slow burning, at times heart breaking, but most of all — beautiful and REAL. It’s a long journey with many bumps along the way, but with an end result that is definitely worth the wait.

About Kristen Ashley

Kristen Ashley grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana, and has lived in Denver, Colorado, and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multigenerational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland, and Kristen grew up listening to the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon, and Whitesnake. Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music and love was a good way to grow up. And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.
